Vince Young is a winner. He looked ugly for much of the game against the Giants on Sunday, but when it counted, once again, he won the game.
Personally, I’d rather have him as my QB than Michael Vick. I’m not sure what the stats are, but I’ve heard that some 40% of Young’s victories as a starter in the NFL came as game winning drives in the fourth quarter.
Sunday was no exception. He led the Eagles on a 91 yard 18 play drive to put them up 17-10 over the Giants, a score that would stand as the final score.
Vince Young is simply a winner. He reminds me of Tebow in this respect. No matter how crappy he played for the first three quarters, he’s able to set that aside and just win the damn game.
Yes, he threw three picks earlier on and made some questionable decisions, but he didn’t let those mistakes get inside his head and stay there.
Which is an interesting point. You’ll notice how a lot of really talented quarterbacks in the league just cannot mentally overcome their own mistakes. Then, you’ve got guys like Tebow and Young, who can look like utter incompetent disasters for most of the game, yet still find a way to win.
THAT, my friend, is what separates winners from losers. The ability to rise above your own mistakes. So many really talented guys in the NFL – and in life – just cannot do that. They remain paralyzed and beaten down mentally.
I really think Vince Young ought to remain Philly’s starter. If Vince Young had been starting the whole year thus far, Philly’s record would be a helluva lot better.
In fact, how many fourth quarter leads have the Eagles blown this year? What is it, five?
If Vince Young had been running the team, I seriously doubt they would have blown those leads.
Course, you may argue about whether they would have had those leads to begin with, but I’d argue that they’d still have a lot more wins.
And, if he remains as the Philly’s QB, Vince Young gives the Eagles their best chance to run the table the rest of the season, which they need to do to have any hope of being in the playoffs.
Michael Vick just ain’t a winner, unfortunately, cuz I like the guy and I’m really excited to see him back in the league and overcoming his past troubles with the dog fighting thing.
I have no idea if Andy Reid would actually leave him in as starter, though. Who knows.

A CATCH IS NOT A CATCH ANYMORE
If you saw the Baltimore Ravens beat the Cincinnati Bengals 31-24 then you saw the Andy Dalton TD pass to Jermaine Gresham that was overturned.
Ridiculous! If you indeed saw that play then you know damn well that was a touchdown. No question whatsoever.
But, unfortunately, you’ve got an NFL rule that requires that the receiver catch the ball and then “maintain possession” until the body of Jimmy Hoffa is found. It’s gotten absolutely ludicrous.
The NFL heads the list as its absurdly poor definition of a catch reared its ugly head in Baltimore. The fourth-quarter play by tight end Jermaine Gresham(notes) that was initially called a touchdown but overturned in review is a catch. Anyone with common sense knows that and the NFL has to find some way to make sure the rule negating receptions like this gets changed. This play had a huge impact on the rest of the game. If the Bengals had scored a touchdown at that point, it would have changed how the end of the game was played (the Bengals could have kicked a field goal on fourth down rather than being forced to go for it). There is no question that this rule has caused too much confusion. Bottom line: There is a difference between a player losing control of the ball and a player using the ball to brace himself from a fall as if it was an extension of his hand. [Jason Cole]
THE DETROIT LIONS AREN’T LOSERS ANYMORE, BUT MANY OF THEIR FANS STILL ARE
The Lions are no longer the Lions of old. They’re not losers. They’ve got an entirely new attitude. They’re tough, and they’re winners.
Unfortunately, many of their fans are still losers, who become hyper-negative at the first sign of adversity.
I cannot stand these people.
Five minutes into the game, and these loser fans are already writing off the Lions.
Look, as a fan, it is your duty to stick by them for the duration of the game. There’s going to be ugly plays, and turnovers, and adversity, but you can’t just bail on them every time something goes wrong.
That makes you a loser. Everything you claim to hate about the Lions of old is precisely what you embody.
And these guys are actually playing the game. You’re laying on your couch, feeding your fat face. At least pretend to have some character and loyalty.
These Lions are kickass. Doesn’t mean they’re not going to screw up, maybe blow a game here and there.
It happens. Grow up. Quit living in the disappointment of the past. Have a little faith. Show some resiliency as a fan.
It’s just as important for a fan to have faith. All those vibes contribute to the general atmosphere surrounding the team.
I’ll admit, after last week’s loss to the Bears, I was pretty disappointed. But we fired the jackass who kicked right to Devin Hester. That made me feel a helluva lot better. That’s something a winning organization does. They don’t tolerate that.
And Matt Stafford’s showing a lot of character playing with his fractured index finger.
My point is that just as it’s important for the Lions players and organization to change their mentality – and THEY HAVE! – it’s equally important for the fans to do the same.
Now, you could argue that the team has to earn the faith of their fans. I don’t believe that, though. Because I’m not a loser who’s going to whine and speak negatively for any reason at any time. Period. That’s not who I am as a person, cuz I’m not a loser.
If you’re a winner, as a human being and as a fan, then even if you’re disappointed in your team’s performance you’re going to express it in a much more hopeful and positive way than your typical loser, beaten down Lion’s fan.
Lion’s fans need to catch up. Knock it off!
I really admire loyalty in people, and being loyal means that you ride with a person or organization through the thick and thin, through adversity and through triumph.
If you’re not willing to bravely and positively endure the hardships, then you are not qualified nor deserving to share in the triumph.
And, should the Lions win the Super Bowl, I don’t want to hear a peep from you, if you followed them the whole way WHINING about every little thing that went wrong.
I really, really, really cannot stand whiners and losers. The Lions are not losers anymore.
But many of their fans are still losers.
HOW BOUT KEVIN SMITH?
By the way, how about Kevin Smith? Is this guy a great story or what? Didn’t have a job a few weeks ago, but kept believing in himself.
He was resigned two weeks ago, and rushed for 140 yards and caught four passes for 61 yards for a total of three touchdowns in Detroit’s 49-35 win over Carolina on Sunday.
Jason Cole had a great piece on Smith in his Sunday Winners and Losers piece.
