Actually, Obama called Bush unpatriotic. Here’s a flashback, Obama, campaign trail, July 3, 2008, Fargo, North Dakota:
“The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion dollars for the first 42 presidents — number 43 added $4 trillion dollars by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion dollars of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. It’s irresponsible. IT’S UNPATRIOTIC!”
According to TreasuryDirect.gov, the US Department of Treasury’s Bureau of the Public Debt’s website, the public debt increased $4.9 trillion under Bush from January 20, 2000 to January 20, 2009, and the public debt increased $4 trillion under Obama from January 20, 2009 to August 23, 2011.
So: the public debt increased $4.9 trillion in 8 years under Bush, but it has taken just 2 and a half years for Obama to add $4 trillion.
Interestingly, in the 6 years before the Democrats took over Congress, the debt went up $2.9 trillion under Bush. During his last two years, with a Democrat controlled Congress, it jumped another $2 trillion.
Enter Obama, and another $4 trillion. Unpatriotic, he says.
